Coordinator of the competence network

The German National Library is the central archiving library and national bibliography centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is a federal institution with legal capacity under public law.

The German National Library is entrusted with the task of collecting, permanently archiving, bibliographically classifying and making available to the general public all German and German-language publications from 1913, foreign publications about Germany, translations of German works, and the works of German-speaking emigrants published abroad between 1933 and 1945.The German National Library maintains co-operative relations on the national and international level. It is, for instance, the leading partner in developing and maintaining rules and standards in Germany and plays a significant role in the development of international standards. The library is also involved in various capacities in a large number of national and international IT projects.

The annual funds provided from the budget of the Minister of State for Culture and the Media currently amount to roughly EUR 45 million.

The German National Library is responsible for the technical project coordination of the development of the German Digital Library (DDB). It is organising the activities – mainly carried out in working groups – within the network, and also those of project members and contractors. Besides those concerning the DDB portal itself (beta launch, regular operation version), the activities include the establishment and development of the future ingest system, the creation of appropriate quality and process assurance tools, the identification and implementation of innovative features and the expansion of the range of services for DDB partners.
