Advanced search
The advanced search allows you to specify your search requests more precisely. You can define whether the results should contain one of the search terms, an exact phrase or all of the search terms. You can also select which fields you want to search in.
You open the advanced search by clicking the Advanced search link below the search field.

Overview of the advanced search elements
(1) Search fields for entering or selecting search terms.
(2) List of the fields in which you can search. By selecting Search all you can search in all the fields.
(3) With the selection list to the right of a search field you specify how you want to search. You can choose from the following options:
- One of the terms: The search result must contain at least one of the search terms.
- All terms: The search result must contain all search terms.
- Exact phrase: The search result must contain the search terms in exactly the specified order. You would typically use this option when you enter titles of works.
(4) Icons for removing and adding a search field. Examples of how to use multiple search fields are given below.
(5) The selection list Connect search fields with is relevant if you enter search terms in multiple search fields. You can choose from the following options:
- OR: The search result must match at least one of the search fields.
- AND: The search result must match all of the search fields.
(6) Icon for adding another search group, which in turn contains one or more search fields. You typically use multiple search groups to formulate complex search requests with multiple fields. Examples are given below.
(7) Icon for removing a search group. This icon is available if you are using multiple search groups.
(8) If you are using multiple search groups, you specify their connection via the selection list Connect search groups with:
- OR: At least one of the search groups must apply to the search result.
- AND: All search groups must apply to the search result.
(9) To start the search, click Search or press Enter. Reset deletes your entries and resets the advanced search to the defaults.
Examples
The following examples show you some ways to use the advanced search.
Searching for one of the search terms
Let's assume you are interested in both Goethe and Schiller. In this case, enter the search terms Goethe Schiller in the search field and select the option One of the terms:
Search all Goethe Schiller One of the terms
You will then get results for Goethe and results for Schiller. If you search with the option All terms, you will only get results containing Goethe and Schiller together.Searching for an exact phrase
If you enter Maria Stuart and select the option Exact phrase, you will only get results containing the first and last name in exactly this order.
Using multiple search fields
With the following entries you will find information about churches and cemetaries in Hessen:

Using multiple search groups
You typically use multiple search groups when you are looking for specific periods, languages and media types. The following example uses two search groups to search for 17th or 18th century churches:

The following search request searches for all German-speaking works from 1991 to 2010 with "Frankfurt" in the title:
