Overview of the results list
The results list shows all entries in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek that match your search terms. The list consists of the following elements:
(2) Navigation elements
(3) Icons for the list and gallery views
(4) Other display options
(6) Search results
The results are sorted according to their relevance for your search, with the most relevant results at the top of the list. You can also sort the list alphabetically by the title of the results, from A-Z or Z-A.
The relevance is calculated using the standard mechanisms of the open-source software Solr. Important criteria for the calculation include the following:
- How often does a search term occur in an entry in relation to the length of the text?
- In which part of the entry does the search term occur?
Long results lists are divided into several pages. You can page forward by clicking Next and back with Previous. Clicking Last takes you to the last page, and First takes you to the first.
You can reduce the number of pages by selecting a higher value in the selection list Results per page.
List and gallery views
You can switch between a list view and a gallery view . In the list view the results are displayed one below the other. In the gallery view multiple results are displayed side by side.
The gallery view is ideal for results with pictures. The compact display gives you more results at a glance for better comparison. If, for example, you are looking for vases, you can get a good overview of the available objects using the thumbnail view.
To see only results containing pictures, you can also select the option Only results with thumbnail.
Other display options
Only results with thumbnail: Shows only results for which there are thumbnail pictures. Results which only have placeholder pictures are hidden. You would typically select this option when looking for paintings, sculptures and other objects from museums. For such objects the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek normally contains pictures.
With the help of filters, you can refine your search results and shorten long results lists. For more information see Filtering search results.
For each search result, various information is displayed, which helps you assess whether the result is relevant for your search.
(1) Title, subtitle and extract from the description of the entry
Your search terms are highlighted in bold. Clicking the title displays the details page of the entry.
(2) Media type icons
The icons indicate the type of material available in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. For an explanation of the icons see Media types.
The thumbnail view contains the picture of the object or a placholder picture if there is none. Clicking the thumbnail displays the details view of the entry.
(4) Categorisation display
All entries in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek are assigned to categories, for example a period, a location and a sector. If you hover the mouse over the thumbnail or the info icon, the categories assigned to the entry are displayed.
