Search of the month: Richard Wagner

The year 2013 will mark both the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner birth and the 130th anniversary of his death. Countless events will be held in honor of the famous composer, especially in Leipzig, where he was born, and Bayreuth, which is most closely associated with his work.

Arien aus „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“, aufgenommen 1920.Arias from "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg", recorded in 1920, from the archives of the SLUB Dresden.

So it is all but impossible to ignore Wagner this year. The media are already waiting in eager anticipation: ARD and ZDF have reported on the kick-off of the Wagner year celebrations (http://www.zdf.de/aspekte/Auftakt-zum-Wagner-Jahr-26119890.html). DIE ZEIT devoted a recent special feature to his life that  „reads like an opera" (http://www.zeit.de/2013/02/Richard-Wagner-Leben), investigates the question of "why Wagner manages to captivate us again and again, despite his abysmal depths" (http://www.zeit.de/2013/02/Oper-Wagner), and reports on current literature and debates on the controversial composer (http://www.zeit.de/2012/41/Richard-Wagner-200-Geburtstag-Literatur). FAZ discusses CD releases for the anniversary (http://www.faz.net/aktuell/feuilleton/buehne-und-konzert/klassik-cd-der-woche/klassik-cd-der-woche-die-amfortas-wunde-ist-ganz-gut-verheilt-12013478.html). The British Telegraph visits Wagner’s birth town Leipzig (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/germany/9785055/Wagner-bicentenery-on-the-trail-of-Richard-Wagner.html) and the Guardian has put together an "A to Z of Wagner"(http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jan/16/a-z-wagner-alberich-antisemitism).

To delve into the celebrations in a well-prepared manner, we recommend paying a visit to the DDB to find images, text and audio files on and by Wagner, including old sound recordings. Have fun browsing!
